CITES stands for Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. There are three levels of classification: I) species that may go extinct; II) trade controlled for these species so they do not rise to the level of potential extinction - “to avoid utilization incompatible with their survival;” III) species “protected in at least one country that has asked other CITES member countries for assistance in controlling traffic.”
